Safety, first

Nobody runs alone.

In about two months, police have found nine women dead in Ekurhuleni. One of them went out for her usual afternoon run and did not come home. The responsibility for violence lies with those who commit it. What the Citadel Run Club can do is make sure nobody in it runs alone, and ask men to do their part.

What the club does

The club carries the safety, not you.

Group runs only

The lead sets a pace the group can hold, and the sweeper always finishes last.

A headcount, twice

Everyone checks in at the start and out at the finish, and the lead sees who is still out.

Busy, well-lit routes

Loops with regroup points, never a long empty stretch.

A private meeting point

Only confirmed places see where the run starts.

After, never live

Our channels never show a route or a start time in advance.

Company there and back

Tell the lead, and we pair you with someone heading the same way.

Options, not rules

None of this is your responsibility, and none of it should have to be. These are options some members choose.

  • Share your live location with someone you trust for the length of your run. WhatsApp and Google Maps both do it.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
  • Keep your phone where you can reach it quickly.
  • Save the numbers below in your phone today.

The white ribbon

Men: this is on us too.

  • Take the pledge. White Ribbon South Africa, run by the Joe Slovo Foundation, is men committing to end men’s violence against women.
  • At our runs, volunteer as a sweeper, or to walk members to their transport afterwards.
  • Everywhere, call out harassment when you see it, including from friends.
  • Report it. The GBV Command Centre on 0800 428 428, or the police on 10111, including when it is someone you know.
  • Give. Support the organisations that do this work every day, starting with White Ribbon South Africa.
